  • NATIONALS AT A GLANCE

Last year: 71-91; 5th in NL East

    Skipper: Manny Acta, first year

Projected lineup: Felipe Lopez, 2B; Cristian Guzman, SS; Ryan Zimmerman, 3B; Austin Kearns, RF; Brian Schneider, C; Ryan Church, LF; Larry Broadway, 1B; Nook Logan, CF.

Who's new: 2B Ronnie Belliard, 1B Dmitri Young, INF Tony Batista, INF Tony Womack, 1B Travis Lee, C Jesus Flores, P Tim Redding, P Jerome Williams, P Ray King, P Joel Hanrahan, P Emiliano Fruto, SS Josh Wilson, OF Michael Restovich, OF Chris Snelling

Who's gone: OF Alfonso Soriano, 2B Jose Vidro, OF Jose Guillen, P Tony Armas Jr., P Pedro Astacio, P Ramon Ortiz.

Top prospects: 1B Larry Broadway; OF Kory Castro. Broadway, a 6-4, 26-year-old lefty, will get the first shot at filling in at first base for the injured Nick Johnson. Castro, who also is expected to see time in the infield during spring training, was the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year the past two seasons.

Outlook: New manager Manny Acta has demonstrated a positive attitude to go along with a wealth of baseball knowledge. And the Nationals do have some good, young talent. But starting pitching is a major concern with just one pitcher – John Patterson – currently nailing down a spot. And the team’s cleanup hitter, first baseman Nick Johnson, will start the season on the disabled list. Low payroll, lack of star power and uncertain starting pitching will be too much to overcome. Playing .500 ball would be a major accomplishment in D.C. this season.
